At 60 months, he can use a lot of expressive words instantly-both adverbs or adjectives, knows normal opposites such as big-small, heavy-light, hard-soft and may be able to count up to 10. He  should have all vowels and the consonants, be able to repeat sentences as long as nine words,  be able to define common objects in terms of use such as comb, shoe or shirt. He should have clear time conception and know how to differentiate between morning, afternoon, night, day, tomorrow, yesterday and today. He should be using fairly long sentences and should use some compound and some complex sentences. Speech on the whole should be grammatically correct by now.

If language development for children is slow

Children have a different rate of learning. Some are fast learners and some are slower. Do not worry if your child is slower. The most important thing is that he is learning and progressing steadily over the years.

If your child has not yet uttered his first word at 18 months old, you must make an effort to spend half an hour a day just playing and interacting one-to-one with your child. This can be quite time consuming especially for busy parents, but it usually has good results.
