Permissive parenting style is sometimes also referred to as an indulgent or non-directive parenting style. In permissive parenting style, parents are usually very involved with their children but never demanding and don’t control their children. Permissive parenting style is a style of parenting in which parents treat their children like friends instead of parents child relationship. Parents are responsive to their children’s needs and not demanding. They love their children and are closely bonded with them. Parents who practise permissive parenting style usually resort to bribery in terms of gifts or money to get children to comply instead of setting boundaries for obedience.
Parents pratising permissive parenting style believe that by showing their love to the children, they will receive the children’s love in return and that is all that matter to them. That is their ultimate goal in parenting. Therefore they are not strict in bringing up their children. They are afraid to oppose their children for fear of being unloved. Permissive parenting style means parents are lenient, lax, liberal and hands-off their children. Permissive parenting style does not require the children to behave well and has no fix rules for them to follow. And this may result in having spoilt brats. Permissive parents often accept both the good and the bad behaviour of their children and avoiding making any comment or choose not to get involved in the children’s activities.

3. Permissive parents tend to be lenient and does not put restriction on their children.
4. Parents who practise permissive parenting style tend to avoid confrontation wherever possible.

6. Children are allowed to make their own decision and control over their behaviour in permissive parenting style of parenting.
7. Permissive parenting style will result in lack of discipline in the children and leads to no responsibility and lack of self-confidence.

Permissive parenting style and the development of children
Studies have shown that permissive parenting style has more negative impact on the development of children than positive ones. The children will grow up to be more selfish and more demanding. They appear to be less loving or supportive towards others. They are often lacking in motivation in life. Children brought up in permissive parenting style are more impulsive and aggressive. Permissive parenting style will produce children who lack in personal responsibility and they tend to have behavioural problem.
On the positive side of permissive parenting style, the children have high self-esteem due to high responsiveness from the permissive parents. They also tend to be more sociable, mature more quickly and live life more independently.
Corrective action for permissive parenting style problems.
The end results of permissive parenting style often shock parents who believe that they have given in their best to raise their children in a loving and permissive environment. They feel disappointed after they have poured in so much love into their children.
It is good to have close bonding with the children but it is more meaningful to be their coach in life and not just friends.
It is not a good idea to allow so much leeway just to get affection from the children in return. The children just want to be guided to become better in life. In order for them to become a better person, try injecting some rules and regulations into your permissive parenting style.
